Abstract

Objective: To analyze post-surgical complications in pediatric patients operated on for appendicitis at a university hospital in the Amazon. Methods: This was a descriptive and retrospective study, in which the medical records of all pediatric patients aged 0 to 14 years who underwent a surgical procedure (appendectomy) in the period 2011-2021 at a university hospital in the city of Belém were analyzed. Results: The results revealed a population aged between three and twelve years, 66.7% male and 33.3% female. The majority of patients who underwent pediatric surgery came from the hospital reference in Belém of Pará (62.5%) and only 25% were from locations close to the metropolitan region. It is noteworthy that a significant portion of patients were in the perforative phase of the disease (71.4%) and the most significant diagnostic hypothesis at the time of admission was acute abdomen. Conclusion: It is concluded that the complications of appendicitis identified in the study were suture dehiscence, septicemia, intra-abdominal collection, Fistula Estertoralis, making the hospitalization time longer, but there was no statistically significant difference in age and sex.
