Abstract
Objective: To investigate knowledge about palliative care among users of primary health care, understand how they acquire information on the topic and its applicability, identifying guidelines in the Health Network and how they affect the lives of users and families. Methods: Study with a qualitative, exploratory approach. Data collection took place through interviews with users of primary care services in the municipalities of Cafelândia-SP, Conquista-MG and Franca-SP and content analysis was carried out. Results: Lack of knowledge about the essence of palliative care, sometimes associated only with end-of-life care and, despite presenting experiences in which palliative care would be indicated, participants showed mistaken and superficial knowledge about these and the services offered in the network of health. Conclusion: It is evident how lack of knowledge and myths associated with palliative care can significantly impact the provision of this care. Since the population is unaware, they are unable to discuss the assistance they receive and enforce the principles of the SUS. Therefore, it is essential to disseminate these concepts throughout the health network, with education and public campaigns, training professionals and ensuring adequate access to palliative care to improve the quality of life of patients and families.
