Abstract
Objective: To identify factors associated with the implementation of humanizing practices in neonatal care. Methods: A cross-sectional, prospective, descriptive-analytical study conducted in neonatal care units (neonatal ICU, neonatal intermediate care unit, and rooming-in) of a 100% public SUS hospital in Porto Alegre, RS. The sample included full-term newborns with an Apgar score ≥7 at the 5th minute and without the need for support at birth. Data collection was performed using physical and electronic records of the newborns and their mothers, with analysis conducted using SPSS. Results: There was a statistically significant association between skin-to-skin contact within the first hour of life and an Apgar score >7 at the 5th minute (p=0.001); breastfeeding within the first hour and the type of delivery (p=0.016), being more common in vaginal deliveries; breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact within the first hour (p=0.010); and the time to the newborn’s first care and the type of delivery (p=0.037). Conclusion: Greater encouragement of breastfeeding is necessary, as well as an in-depth evaluation of the reasons for not implementing good practices for newborns.
