Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of palliative care in patients with terminal illness in the literature. Methods: Integrative Literature Review. The following keywords registered in the Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCs) were considered as search strategies: “Palliative care”, “cancer”, “efficacy”, “palliative activity”, “quality of life”, “psychosocial support”, “communication”, “treatment”, “terminal illness”. Results: Eight studies were selected. Regarding methodological aspects, 50% of the selected studies correspond to retrospective cohort studies, 12.5% to prospective cohort studies, 12.5% to randomized clinical trials, 12.5% to longitudinal studies and 12.5% to qualitative studies. The sample ranged from 12 patients to 445 patients. The entire sample was made up of patients in a terminal state of life. The implementation of palliative care can promote positive changes in communication and care, resulting in the identification of multiple needs for symptom control, communication and important recommendations associated with patient treatment. Final considerations: Palliative care can be considered effective in improving the quality of life of cancer patients, even when carried out late. Patients must be approached individually, considering cultural, social aspects and the disease itself, in order to offer symptom reduction, comfort and better communication in the face of care transitions.
