Abstract

Objective: Identify scientific studies on the use of cannabinoid derivatives in the treatment of neurological disorders in elderly patients. Methods: Integrative review of the literature on data platforms PubMED, Portal Regional Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde, and Periódicos CAPES, carried out between August and December 2023. Descriptors from the Medical Subject Headings were used: "aged", "therapeutic", "cannabis", "parkinson's disease", "epilepsy", "dementia", "bipolar disorders" and "depression" combined with the Boolean operator “AND”. Works from the last 10 years were included, without language restrictions, excluding duplicates and revisions. The initial screening was carried out by two independent evaluators, and discrepancies were resolved by consensus. Results: The final sample consisted of 25 articles, which described the use of cannabinoids for the treatment of Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety and sleep complaints, chronic diseases (cancer, glaucoma and HIV/ AIDS), depression, frontotemporal dementia, bipolar disorder, multiple sclerosis, refractory neuropathic pruritus in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and epilepsy. Final considerations: The discussion about the use of cannabinoids has grown, showing benefits in various neurological disorders and improving the quality of life in the elderly, but there is still a lack of studies on their effectiveness and safety.
