Abstract

Objective: To analyze blood transfusion requests in a municipal hospital. Methods: This was a retrospective analytical study conducted through the analysis of blood transfusion requests. Results: We analyzed 1,866 red blood cell concentrate requests. Anemia was the most prevalent reason, accounting for 49.7%, and 44.32% of the requests were for two units of red blood cell concentrate per request. The Intensive Care Unit made the most requests, with 38.7%, followed by the emergency room (22.8%). The urgent modality was responsible for 65.3% of the requests. Regarding hemoglobin levels, on average, 52.68% had levels below 7 g/dL, followed by levels between 7 g/dL and 8 g/dL, with 22.6%. In total, 25.04% of the transfusion requests left the hemoglobin levels blank. Conclusion: It was identified that transfusions occur in a liberal and non-restrictive manner, contrary to literature guidelines. The most requested transfusion modality was urgent, which implies risks for the patient, as well as requests without the reasons and hemoglobin levels filled in. This demonstrates the need to expand training initiatives for professionals on blood management.
