Abstract

Objective: describe the perception and knowledge of palliative care by nurses who work in Basic Health Centers in the urban area of a city in Bahia. Method: exploratory, descriptive and qualitative study, done between July and November 2019, based on the application of a semi-structured interview consisting of four questions to 11 nurses of USFs from a city in Bahia. Results: four categories emerged from the data analysis: (1) lack of theoretical-practical knowledge about palliative care, highlighting issues associated with lack of qualification, inputs and difficulties in dealing with terminality; (2) identification of patients eligible for palliative care, in which aspects related to users in the area covered by the Basic Health Unit that are indicated for such care were addressed; (3) nurses' performance with the healthcare team, in which actions such as activating multidisciplinary support and home monitoring were mentioned; (4) challenges faced by nurses, in which training deficiencies, structural difficulties and dealing with spirituality were relevant topics. Conclusion: nurses have insufficient knowledge about palliative care, which makes it difficult to identify eligible patients in the area and contributes to limitations in the care provided.
