Abstract
Objective: To investigate the literature on possible risk factors associated with the development of brain tumors in children and adolescents. Methods: Integrative review study carried out in the LILACS and Pubmed databases. The keywords “brain tumor”, “child”, “adolescent”, “risk factor” were used. All keywords were paired using the Boolean operator AND. Results: 10 studies were selected, seven of which were case control studies, two were meta-analyses and one was a systematic review. Children were at increased risk for brain tumors with maternal occupational exposure to chlorinated solvents at any time before birth. Paternal exposure was associated with a higher risk of tumor development only in the year before conception and was attributed especially to benzene. A risk for the development of medulloblastoma was also observed in children with high birth weight. No statistically significant associations were observed in relation to the development of ependymoma. Final considerations: This study provides information on the history of brain tumors in childhood, demonstrating that early onset or exposure to pesticides, chlorinated solvents, benzene, other aromatics and radiological procedures can be harmful in the neonatal period, being considered avoidable factors.
