Abstract

Objective: To identify the composition, usage, dependency relationships, and health consequences of electronic cigarette use. Methods: This study is an integrative review, covering documents published between 2016 and 2024, including scientific articles in both Portuguese and other languages. The review aimed to answer the question: what are the health impacts of electronic cigarette use? The research was conducted using articles from the PubMed and SciElo Brasil platforms, based on various studies. The descriptors used were: Electronic Cigarette and composition, chemical dependency, nicotine, respiratory symptoms, cardiovascular symptoms, skin and mucous membranes, gastrointestinal symptoms, EVALI, and smoking, combined with the operator "AND" to generate diverse results. Results: Ten studies were included that addressed the characteristics and use of electronic cigarettes, as well as their implications for health. Conclusion: The growing use of electronic cigarettes shows negative health impacts. Although still under study, their harms cannot be ruled out, nor can full benefits for users be confirmed.
