Abstract
Objective: To identify the challenges faced by nurses in the practice of palliative care in an oncohematology unit. Methods: This is an exploratory, descriptive research with a qualitative approach, carried out with 12 nurses working in a hospital inpatient unit, specialized in oncohematology. Data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews, in July 2018. The interviews were recorded using an MP4 player, transcribed and systematized for subsequent analysis, following the path of qualitative data analysis proposed by Bardin and Minayo. Results: Nurses highlighted aspects related to the lack of knowledge regarding professional training, resulting in a lack of emotional preparation to deal with terminal illness, barriers in communication with patients and families, difficulties in eligibility and indication of palliative care only in terminal illness, actions insufficient resources and lack of support from the consulting team. Conclusion: The challenges faced by nurses in PC practice were associated with a lack of professional training, emotional unpreparedness, communication problems, eligibility differences and late indication.
