Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze and compare suicide rates in the North and Northeast of the country before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Bearing in mind that even with the technological advances of the century, the population still lacks studies that generate concise data on the subject. Methods: This is an epidemiological, descriptive study with a quantitative approach, using data from the Mortality Information System (SIM) on the DATASUS database. Results: The increase in the number of suicide cases during the pandemic period was slight in both regions, in line with the average found in the literature on these associations between pandemic periods and mental health. Conclusion: The country has experienced an increase in suicide rates, albeit discreet, challenging the perception that this is a problem restricted to developed nations. Public policies in this area need to be strengthened so that tackling it becomes a task not just for the patient, but for society.
