Abstract
Objective: To investigate the literature on the treatments available for vaso-occlusive crisis in patients with Sickle Cell Anemia. Methods: Integrative Literature Review. The electronic survey took place in the Pubmed and LILACS databases. The search in electronic databases took place with the help of the keywords “Sickle Cell Anemia”, “Treatment”, “Occlusive Vaso Pain”, “Sickle Cell Disease”. The words were further translated into English as follows: “Sickle cell anemia”, “Treatment”, “Vaso occlusive pain”, “Sickle cell disease”. Results: 16 studies were selected, the most recent being published in 2023 and the oldest in 2007. Acute pain occurs in regions of the back, chest, abdomen and extremities, and can be triggered by episodes of dehydration, infection, asthma attacks and very mild temperatures. The use of opioids in the treatment of vaso-occlusive pain crises in individuals with SCA can be considered effective. Final considerations: Hydroxyurea therapy is the only disease-modifying drug approved by the FDA and presents excellent results in terms of disease modification. Opioid drugs and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs remain the basis for the treatment of patients with vaso-occlusive crisis.
