Abstract

Objective: To describe the main complications of the stoma and peristomal skin in individuals with intestinal ostomies. Methods: This descriptive study involved 387 patients from health services in Ceará's three macro-regions: Fortaleza, Sobral, and Cariri. The sample was estimated for a finite population and proportionally distributed among the municipalities. Data were analyzed using R Studio®, with calculations of simple and relative frequencies. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee (opinion No. 2,542,686). Results: Most participants were male (55%), under 60 years old (76%), had an income of up to one minimum wage (78%), and had a permanent stoma (56%). A total of 186 participants (48.1%) reported complications related to the stoma and/or peristomal skin, with contact dermatitis being the most common (46.08%), followed by parastomal hernia (12.44%) and bleeding/hemorrhage (9.21%). Of these, 46 participants (45.09%) attributed the complication to the collection equipment, 13 (12.74%) did not know the cause, and 13 (12.74%) linked it to the surgeries. Conclusion: The study revealed that most participants experienced complications, with contact dermatitis being the most frequent, primarily related to the collection equipment material.
