Abstract

Objective: To analyze, through a literature review, the use of Computed Tomography (CT) in the evaluation of incisional hernias (IHs). Methods: This is an integrative review, with searches performed in the PubMed and ScienceDirect databases and manual searches in citations of literature reviews. Articles in English published between 2019-2024 and studies on the use of CT for diagnosis and surgical planning of IHs, regardless of the year, were included. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 61 articles were selected from 902 initial records. Literature Review: IHs result from weakness in the sutured abdominal wall, caused by inadequate healing or mechanical overload, leading to abdominal protrusion. Associated with high morbidity and mortality, they represent a public health problem and require surgical intervention. Although the diagnosis is clinical, exams such as CT or magnetic resonance imaging are recommended for surgical planning, especially in complex cases. CT is considered the most appropriate examination due to its high sensitivity and resolution, allowing clear visualization of abdominal structures and helping to predict surgical results. Final considerations: Images obtained by CT are useful in the preoperative period of IHs to personalize surgical approaches according to the patient's anatomy and comorbidities, especially due to its high sensitivity and specificity.
