Abstract
Objective: The study evaluated the perceptions of caregivers of children with ADHD treated at the psychiatry outpatient clinic of a public hospital in northeastern Brazil, as well as the importance of early treatment. Methods: This is a qualitative study conducted with 10 participants, aged 27 to 55 years. Data collection was carried out through individual semi-structured interviews that included information about the parents' perceptions of the diagnosis and treatment, the clinical condition of the children, family history, and sociodemographic characterization. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: The sample had an average age of 40.9 years, with a predominance of mothers as primary caregivers. The study investigated the impacts of ADHD on family dynamics, addressing associated comorbidities and behavioral challenges faced by diagnosed children. The interviews revealed the daily difficulties faced by families and the coping strategies they adopted. Conclusion: It is concluded that understanding the challenges and coping strategies related to ADHD and its comorbidities provides a clearer view of the need for integrated and personalized approaches to the treatment of these disorders.
