Abstract
Objective: To conduct an epidemiological study on cases of gestational and congenital syphilis in the municipality of Iguatu (CE), Brazil, from May 2019 to April 2023, comparing the periods before and after the implementation of a set of actions aimed at combating congenital syphilis. Methods: Descriptive and comparative study, using data from the syphilis notification forms of the Information System for Notifiable Diseases (SINAN). A general epidemiological description was conducted, followed by a comparative and correlation analysis between the periods before and after the implementation of the actions. A total of 83 reported cases were analyzed: 71 of gestational syphilis and 12 of congenital syphilis. Results: The majority of gestational syphilis cases occurred in young and socially vulnerable women. After the implementation of the actions, there was an increase in notifications of gestational syphilis and a 50% reduction in cases of congenital syphilis, along with improvements in notification, diagnosis, and treatment indicators. Conclusion: The control of maternal and child syphilis in the municipality of Iguatu has improved in recent years, suggesting that the implemented local strategy may have significantly contributed to this improvement.
