Abstract
Objective: To assess the importance of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbG) for the diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus. Methods: Were identified 43 patients with a diagnosis of hyperglycemia during pregnancy, including 5 cases of previous diabetes (diabetes diagnosed during pregnancy) and 37 cases of gestational diabetes mellitus. All patients were subjected to HbA1c dosage using the high-performance chromatography (HLPC). It was defined would be p< 0.05. Results: The average age of the patients was 30.8 + 5,97 years, with minimum values of 19 and maximum of 42 years. The average number of pregnancies, births and abortions was 2.17 + 1.59, 1.49 + 1.28 and 0.37 + 0.92, respectively. When the identified glycated hemoglobin was assessed, it averaged 5.92 + 0.94 g/dl. The association of two HbG values with the diagnosis of hyperglycemia in pregnancy with blood glucose or the overload test with 75g of dextrosol was not significant, since the HbG means were not different (p>0.05). The logistic regression did not show any correlation between the levels of glycated hemoglobin and the diagnosis of gestational diabetes (p>0.05), except for cases of previous diabetes (p<0.05). Conclusion: Glycated hemoglobin should not be used alone for the diagnosis of gestational diabetes.
