Abstract
Objective: To analyze and compare the B12 vitamin levels of patients who underwent bariatric surgery using the "Gastric Bypass" technique between 2012 and 2022 through laboratory profiles. Methods: This observational and retrospective study analyzed data from 102 patients in the Bariatric System® database, used by the bariatric surgery team at a hospital in the state of Pará. Demographic characteristics and B12 vitamin levels were assessed pre and post-operatively (1st, 5th, and 10th year). Data were analyzed using Python 3.8 and Microsoft Excel® 365. Results: The sample shows a higher incidence of individuals in the age groups of 18-25 years and 26-35 years, each with 24.51%, with a predominance of females (56.86%). Vitamin B12 deficiency is more prevalent pre-operatively (79.4%) and in the 1st year post-surgery (62.7%), with a decrease in the 5th year (21.6%) and 10th year (14.7%). There is a higher incidence of deficiency in women, particularly in the 1st and 10th years post-operatively. Conclusion: There is a B12 vitamin deficit in patients who underwent gastric bypass throughout the analyzed period, necessitating ongoing laboratory monitoring and adequate nutritional support for life.
