Abstract

Objective: To compare the main diagnostic methods used, aiming to deconstruct the historical ideal that diagnosis is merely the presence or absence of pathologies. Literature review: Endometriosis is a disorder characterized by the presence of extrauterine tissue, which presents with a series of clinical manifestations such as abdominal pain, dyspareunia (pain during sexual intercourse), bleeding, urinary and intestinal pain, nausea, lower back pain, and infertility. Diagnostic methods are essential for confirming the suspicion of the disease and for staging, with the most commonly used being laparoscopy (gold standard), pelvic and transvaginal ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging. However, there is a great difficulty in establishing an ideal diagnostic method for this condition. Final considerations: Therefore, it is of utmost importance to diagnose endometriosis; however, among the main diagnostic methods studied, there is not only one with greater accuracy, but rather multiple diagnostic approaches that should take into account the subtypes of endometriosis, its location, and extension, adapting to the reality of each patient.
