Abstract

Objective: To identify the correlations between symptoms of postpartum depression (PPD) and the level of self-efficacy for breastfeeding, as well as to analyze the existence of a possible relationship between these two circumstances. Methods: This is an integrative literature review, which was limited to articles in Portuguese and English, published between 2014 and 2024. The databases used were: Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO), Virtual Health Library (BVS) and PubMed. Initially, 638 articles were found; however, after applying the exclusion and inclusion criteria, 10 articles were selected. Results: The findings indicate that there is a strong association between symptoms of postpartum depression, such as stress, fear and sadness, and early weaning. In addition, low levels of plasma oxytocin in the prenatal and postpartum periods may be indicative of early interruption or absence of breastfeeding. Final considerations: The analyses of the different types of studies demonstrate that PPD is a problem that interferes with the practice of exclusive breastfeeding. Therefore, it proposes the promotion of social programs and projects that guide the adequate prenatal monitoring of pregnant women to prevent or mitigate the harmful effects of PPD.
