Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to perform an integrative literature review to assess the current state of literature on "Endodontics and Phytotherapeutics", identifying which phytotherapeutics show promising results for intracanal irrigation and medication. Methods: The review included articles from the PubMed, Scielo and BVS databases, covering a period of 10 years and using the descriptors in English and Portuguese: “phytotherapy”, “phytotherapeutic drugs”, “plants, medicinal” and “endodontics”, combined by the Boolean operator “OR”. Studies in Portuguese and English, both in vitro and clinical, focused on the use of phytotherapeutics in intracanal irrigation and medication were included, while literature reviews and animal studies were excluded. Results: The most highlighted phytotherapeutics were propolis, ginger, garlic extract, chamomile, copaiba, pomegranate, aroeira-da-praia, cat's claw and clove. The main biological activities that favor endodontic treatment identified were anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiseptic, healing, analgesic and antifungal. Conclusion: It is concluded that phytotherapeutics are promising for future investigations and may be effective candidates for irrigation or intracanal medication formulations in endodontic treatments.
