Abstract

Objective: To identify management possibilities for patients with high-output stoma. Methods: Integrative literature review conducted in the PubMed, Cochrane Library, and BVS databases between June and August 2024, using the search strategy “High Output Stoma” AND “Management”. Full-text articles written in Portuguese, English, or Spanish between 2014 and 2024 were included. Results: A total of 104 studies were identified in the databases. After evaluation and refinement of the studies using the established criteria, a total of 13 studies were obtained for analysis. Three thematic categories were established to summarize the review: “use of medications,” “nutritional therapy,” and “nutritional monitoring.” Final considerations: The data suggest that early nutritional monitoring from admission and especially after discharge, the use of loperamide, the provision of an elementary/semi-elemental diet, isotonic oral hydration, the use of thickeners, the creation of institutional flows and qualified nursing care are management possibilities for patients with high-output stoma.
