Abstract

Objective: The objective was to identify the knowledge of postpartum women regarding obstetric violence and their level of health literacy. Methods: Descriptive, cross-sectional study, carried out with 50 postpartum women in the shared accommodation of a reference hospital. Two instruments were used, the health literacy test (TLS) and an adapted Likert-type questionnaire to assess knowledge about obstetric violence. The study authorized by the ethics committee with CAAE: 59063722.7.0000.5201. Results: The majority of women reported having completed high school (72%); declared themselves mixed-race (72%) with a family income of up to one minimum wage (78%). 40% reported living in a stable relationship and 82% had more than 6 prenatal consultations. 68% did not receive health education about obstetric violence (OV). 54% said they did not know what VO is. Around 44% of women had limited health literacy and 56% of them had substantial knowledge about obstetric violence. The postpartum women had difficulties in understanding basic reading, text interpretation and simple calculations. Conclusion: Health education about obstetric violence proved to be weak. Encouraging training practices regarding health literacy and communication for professionals can lead to improvements in communication in health services and a reduction in morbidity and mortality in this population.
