Abstract

Objective: To map the knowledge landscape on autism associated with sleep disorders and to summarize advances in research on the insomniac phenotype. Methods: This is a scientometric and integrative review of the literature in the Web of Science database. For the integrative review, the following guiding question was used: What are the scientific advances in the phenotype of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) associated with insomnia? The selected texts were in English or Portuguese, published between 2019 and 2024. Results: 69 articles were included in the scientometric analysis, 69.6% of which were original research. 62.3% focused on signs and symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. 16 articles met the inclusion and exclusion criteria for the integrative review. There were advances in the investigation of circadian rhythm and iron metabolism genes, sensory hyperreactivity, and physiological hyperarousal. A positive correlation with parental stress was found. A scarcity of epidemiological surveys was noted. Regarding treatment, cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia shows promise. On the other hand, melatonin has limited indications and iron supplementation has not been recommended. Conclusion: Despite recent advances and increasing scientific production, the results indicate the need for further investigations, epidemiological studies and therapeutic approaches to improve the quality of sleep in these individuals.
