Abstract
Objective: To report a clinical case using Photobiomodulation (FBM) in the treatment of oral mucositis (OM) in a 15-year-old patient with Down syndrome (DS) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), detailing the treatment performed and the conclusion of the case. Case Details: A 15-year-old white female patient was admitted to the Alcides Carneiro University Hospital, diagnosed with ALL and undergoing high-dose methotrexate chemotherapy. She developed OM, manifesting painful oral lesions that hindered her ability to eat. As treatment, FBM therapy was initiated, adjusting the approach according to the patient's varying levels of cooperation. After a few sessions, significant improvement in the healing of the lesions and reduction in pain was observed, allowing her to resume oral feeding without significant discomfort. Final Considerations: The clinical experience observed in this study underscores the relevance and importance of using FBM as a valuable intervention for managing OM in vulnerable patients, including those with DS undergoing chemotherapy.
