Abstract

Objective: To evaluate, through a case report, the use of low-intensity laser therapy on the signs and symptoms of TMD and trismus. Case details: A 29-year-old female patient, who presented bilateral facial pain with greater intensity on the left side and limited mouth opening, was seen at a university dental clinic. After a detailed anamnesis and diagnosis of TMD and trismus, a conservative treatment with laser therapy was proposed. The protocol consisted of six sessions, with the application of an infrared laser to the temporomandibular joint region and a red laser to the masseter muscle. Pain levels were recorded before and after each session, using the Visual Analogue Pain Scale, and the maximum mouth opening, measured by the distance between the incisal edges of teeth 11 and 41. Final considerations: Laser therapy resulted in a reduction significant reduction in pain (from 6 to 2) and an improvement in mouth opening (from 33 mm to 51 mm) throughout the sessions, indicating a positive evolution in the clinical picture.
