Abstract

Objective: To analyze the therapeutic surgical techniques used in patients with acute appendicitis. Methods: This is an integrative review, with articles published between 2014 and 2024 in Portuguese, English and Spanish and with the content available in full. As a guiding question, the following was used: “Which surgical technique is most beneficial for patients with acute appendicitis?” The bibliographic research was carried out in the MedLine, Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Science (LILACS), and Spanish Bibliographic Index in Health Sciences (IBECS) databases during the months of April and July 2024. the Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS): “Laparoscopy”, “Laparotomy” and “Appendectomy” with the Boolean operator “AND”.  Results: The 11 publications meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria reveal that laparoscopic appendectomy is recommended compared to open laparotomy considering the criteria and parameters of the patient's clinical situation. Final considerations: When analyzing the parameters and evaluation criteria for the best surgical method, time and safety, the laparoscopy technique demonstrated superiority in relation to the others. Regarding the most effective surgical techniques for implementation in the public health sector, it was found that the laparoscopic procedure is the technique proven to be the most effective, safe and economical.
