Abstract

Objective: To identify the factors that facilitate and hinder self-care and quality of life, in the transition to aging. Method: Integrative review. The guiding question was formulated: “What are the elements of the transition process that influence self-care and quality of life in elderly people. The databases National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health (PubMed), Web of Science (WOS), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) were used. and American Psychological Association (APA PsycInfo), Biomedical Answer (EMBASE), Scopus (ELSEVIER). Specific controlled descriptors were used for each database: Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) for PubMed, WOS and Scopus; Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS) for LILACS; CINAHL Subject Headings for CINAHL; APA Thesaurus for APA PsycInfo; and Emtree for EMBASE. Results: The final sample was composed of 22 studies, with two categories emerging: Facilitating factors for self-care and better quality of life and Factors inhibiting self-care and quality of life. Final considerations: The transition to aging affects the elderly person's self-care and quality of life, as some capabilities may undergo changes, while giving them the opportunity to reevaluate their priorities and seek ways to promote their well-being and quality of life.
