Abstract

Objective: To apply nursing care to people with residual disabilities resulting from leprosy. Methods: This is a qualitative care research study that uses Transition Theory as its theoretical basis. Data collection took place at a hospital in the state of Piauí, using an instrument with three open-ended questions. The information was recorded using cell phone recordings. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: In total, seventeen people were interviewed. The presence of disabilities reduces the ability to perform tasks, affecting quality of life and generating socioeconomic inequalities. Furthermore, family estrangement and self-deprecating views cause significant psychological effects, exacerbating the challenges associated with the disease. The inability to work has a significant impact on mental health, since, in addition to financial support, it constitutes a fundamental part of identity. Furthermore, self-care is essential to maintain quality of life. Conclusion: The nursing therapies performed point to the wide range of physical and mental needs of the patients receiving care. It is prudent to identify leprosy as a condition that presents mental needs that must be adequately addressed.
