Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the frequency of postpartum depression in puerperal women treated in the early and late puerperium. Methods: Ninety-nine puerperal women treated in the early and late puerperium were studied to assess symptoms of postpartum depression. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was used for this purpose. The questionnaire was then reapplied in the late puerperium. Patients who scored > 12 points on the questionnaire were considered to have depressive symptoms. All responses were transcribed into Excel and statistical data were evaluated using Jamovi software for Mac. Was considered p < 0.05. Results: In the evaluation in the immediate postpartum period, it was found that 31.3% (n = 31) were classified as having depressive symptoms and 68.7% (n = 68) did not present these symptoms. The average points identified in the EDPS was 9.49 + 9.00 points. In the late postpartum period, it was possible to evaluate data from 78 patients, since 12 patients were not located. The evaluation, in this period, identified 23 patients with depressive symptoms (29.5%) and 55 patients without depressive symptoms (70.5%). The average score was 9.04 + 5.95. Conclusion: Postpartum depression is present in the population and should be a concern in the care of these patients.
