Abstract

Objective: To analyze the complications of postpartum perineal lacerations and the challenges associated with their management. Methods: The integrative review was carried out following the PRISMA guidelines and included studies published between 2019 and 2024, such as observational, clinical trials, and systematic reviews that explored the complications of perineal lacerations resulting from vaginal delivery. Results: The selected studies highlight that perineal lacerations can result in severe pain, local infections, and postpartum hemorrhage. In the long term, complications such as pelvic organ prolapse, postpartum depression, dyspareunia, and urinary and fecal incontinence can significantly impact women's quality of life. Final thoughts: To improve maternal outcomes, it is crucial to implement immediate and preventive interventions in the management of perineal lacerations. Thus, investing in professional training, encouraging scientific research on the subject and adopting approaches are essential measures to promote a more positive and safe birth experience.
