Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of cone beam computed tomography and intraoral digital scanning in the production of digital dental models. Methods: An accuracy study was carried out, approved by the Research Ethics Committee (opinion number 6,259,856). Digital models of cone beam computed tomography and intraoral scanning were compared to plaster models obtained from two volunteers. The plaster models were produced from a polyvinylsiloxane mold in double impression. Measurements were taken at previously determined points in the models for comparison. Subsequently, the digital models were superimposed to evaluate the presence of tooth-to-tooth distortions. Results: There was no difference between the plaster models and the digital models when comparing the distances between the reference points and the buccolingual width of the teeth. When superimposing the DICOM and STL digital models, however, differences in overcontour were observed when considering groups of teeth and faces. Conclusion: Digital models have gained increasing space in the dental clinical routine, however, they should be considered with caution when planning is required that requires great precision.
