Abstract

Objective: To analyze the epidemiological and nutritional profile of pediatric oncology patients hospitalized from 2020 to 2021 at a reference hospital in the Lower Amazon region in the state of Pará, Brazil. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive, and retrospective study with a quantitative approach on the epidemiological and nutritional profile of hospitalized pediatric oncology patients, covering the medical records from January 2020 to December 2021. Results: A total of 23 patient records were analyzed, with males representing 56.52% and females 43.48%. The most common cancers among the groups were leukemias. The nutritional status of pediatric oncology patients was classified according to BMI for age (Z-score), with a higher prevalence of eutrophy in over 50% of participants across age groups. Approximately 91.30% were undergoing chemotherapy, while 8.70% were not undergoing any treatment. Conclusion: Male children aged five years or older, of mixed race, non-literate, mostly residing in the city of Santarém, had leukemias as the highest incidence of cancer in both sexes. This research revealed that the majority of children undergoing chemotherapy were affected by gastrointestinal symptoms that may lead to malnutrition.
