Abstract
Objective: To analyze mortality during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and its post-infection consequences, highlighting epidemiology, clinical treatment and mortality rates in intensive care units (ICUs). Literature review: The COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the importance of ICUs, revealing high mortality rates and prolonged sequelae among survivors, such as fatigue, dyspnea and cognitive problems, especially in women and people with unvaccinated comorbidities. Mortality was significantly linked to older age and pre-existing illnesses, highlighting the need for more ICU beds and specialized professionals. Further studies are needed to better understand long-term sequelae and develop therapeutic treatments. Final considerations: The results highlight the vital importance of ICUs in the COVID-19 pandemic, with an emphasis on the continuous need for improvement in the face of high mortality rates and persistent sequelae. The expansion of beds and qualification of professionals have been essential, but further studies are needed to understand and effectively treat long-term sequelae, strengthening ICUs to face future challenges.
