Abstract
Objective: To map scientific literature evidence on the efficacy of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in the treatment of Alcohol Dependence, comparing it with other standard treatments (and the absence of treatment) and to examine its incidence in the treatment of dependence. Methods: This is a Scoping Review developed according to the “JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis.” Studies related to the aforementioned objectives were analyzed. Searches in the databases “BVS,” “PubMed,” and “Google Scholar” using the descriptors “Cognitive Behavioral Therapy” and “Alcohol,” with the filters “publications from the last 5 years” and “free full text,” resulted in 141 articles. Results: Ten studies that met the inclusion criteria were selected. All studies agree on the efficacy of CBT in treating Alcohol Dependence, although the degree of evidence varies according to modality, use of medication, and/or combination with other evidence-based approaches. Data obtained from meta-analyses indicate that best practices involve a combination of pharmacotherapy and CBT or another evidence-based therapy. There is widespread use; however, in Brazil, most professionals are not sufficiently specialized. Conclusion: CBT is effective and widely used in the treatment of Alcohol Dependence, comparable to other evidence-based therapies.
