Abstract
Objective: To analyze the efficacy of a mindfulness-based protocol in adults attending a health college in Northeastern Brazil. Methods: Randomized, before-and-after clinical trial. The data for analysis were collected pre and post-intervention, through sociodemographic questionnaire and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. The intervention was composed of three techniques validated by Hoffman (2021): Progressive Muscular Relaxation, Diaphragmatic Breathing and Positive Imaging, applied in six 1-hour sessions. Results: The participants were 17 adults, 10 of which allocated in the intervention group, and 7 in the control group. 16 participants reported experiencing symptoms of anxiety in the past 14 days, while 13 reported experiencing symptoms of depression. In the intervention group, there was a statistically significant decrease in anxiety and depression scores, being a bigger number than in the control group. Conclusion: The following research suggests that mindfulness-based techniques are effective in reducing anxiety and depression symptoms, when compared to the control group. Furthermore, future studies with bigger samples and long-term evaluation of the effects are required.
