Abstract

Objective: Evaluate the anticoagulant and antiplatelet activity of ethyl gallate in rats. Methods: This was an experimental study conducted on Wistar rats divided into five groups: control group, group ethyl gallate 5 mg.kg-1, group ethyl gallate 50 mg.kg-1, group enoxaparin 5 mg.kg-1, group ethyl gallate 5 mg.kg-1 + enoxaparin 5 mg.kg-1; antiplatelet and anticoagulant activities were evaluated against ADP stimulation and coagulation tests, respectively. All protocols were approved by Comissão de Ética de Uso de Animais of Universidade Federal da Paraíba. Results: Reduction in platelet aggregation in the groups treated with ethyl gallate and no change in the coagulation profile, compared to control group, indicating a possible antiplatelet activity without impairing coagulation; an enhancement in the activity of enoxaparin via the intrinsic coagulation pathway was also observed, revealing a potential of the compound in association with the drug already established in therapy. Conclusion: Ethyl gallate showed relevant antiplatelet potential and did not affect the coagulation pathway, revealing itself as a promising antiplatelet agent with possible therapeutic application.
