Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of nursing diagnosis indicators Ineffective airway clearance in elderly people hospitalized with pneumonia. Methods: Cross-sectional study and quantitative design, carried out in a public hospital in João Pessoa, Paraíba, with a sample of 43 people. Data collection occurred through structured interviews and specific physical examination. In the analysis, statistical tests of accuracy measures of clinical nursing diagnosis indicators were adopted. Results: Ineffective airway clearance was observed in 28 (65.1%) participants. The most prevalent indicators were: adventitious respiratory sounds, 36 (83.7%), and orthopnea, 33 (76.7%). The most sensitive accuracy measurements were: cyanosis and hyperthermia (100%); the most specific included: changes in breathing pattern, hyperthermia and mental confusion (100%). Changes in respiratory frequency increased the chance of the phenomenon occurring among the elderly by 348 times. Excess sputum and absent cough were very influential in the outcome of ineffective clearance in the target population. Conclusion: The results will support the implementation of nursing actions to resolve the problem among elderly people.
