Abstract

Objective: To analyze the importance of the work of the multiprofessional health team in maintaining breastfeeding in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, considering the importance of maintaining the lactation of these mothers for the child's food and nutritional security and reducing morbidity and mortality. Methods: Integrative review research using the databases Portal da BVS, Pubmed and Science Direct, with the descriptors Patient Care Team, Breastfeeding and Neonatal Intensive Care Units. Results: As hindering factors, the studies point to the inadequacy of the physical structure and the conceptual difficulty of health professionals in recognizing different techniques for offering breast milk as a form of breastfeeding, indicating the need for educational practices as a tool for improving care. Among the facilitating factors were the support of the health team, the implementation of public policies and technical and educational tools that support and promote breastfeeding. Final considerations: The hospitalization of newborns in the neonatal ICU is a factor that hinders the maintenance of breastfeeding, and therefore the maintenance of lactation, leading to the risk of early weaning.
