Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the impact of blood-brain barrier modulation by ultrasound focused on neuroinflammation, with a focus on the therapeutic implications for neurological and neurodegenerative diseases. Methods: Integrative review in PubMed Central (PMC). A total of 587 articles were initially selected. Based on strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, using only articles in English from 2020 to 2024, 17 articles were selected. Results: The use of focused ultrasound directly influences neuroinflammatory processes, by inducing the temporary opening of the blood-brain barrier, promoting the effect of increased penetration of immunological and pharmacological therapies, as well as the purifying process of proteins with cellular and neurogenic stimulation, also allowing cognitive improvement, without associated cell damage or death. Final considerations: Focused ultrasound is a promising and simple approach, allowing its use in neurodegenerative, neuroinflammatory, neuro-oncological processes and neuromotor disorders. However, further studies should be carried out in order to demonstrate the maximum therapeutic potential of this therapeutic category.
