Abstract

Objective: To analyze the contribution of 3D printing of medicines in the development of pharmaceutical forms and its implications for the evolution of the pharmaceutical technological scenario. Methodos: Integrative literature review with a time frame between January 2019 and December 2023. The guiding question was used: “What are the contributions of 3D printing of medicines in the development of pharmaceutical forms and the evolution of the pharmaceutical technological scenario?” Results: The search in the databases identified 30 articles and a total of 11 articles were selected in which the main 3D printed pharmaceutical forms were eggs, implantable devices, micro needles and mucoadhesive oral films and the main 3D printing techniques used are molding by fused deposition (FDM) and stereolithography (SLA). The selected articles demonstrate a remarkable similarity in the use of 3D printing as an innovative approach to creating pharmaceutical forms. Final considerations: Although 3D printing brings countless opportunities to the pharmaceutical sector, there are still challenges regarding its complexity and process costs. Finally, 3D printing of medicines opens new avenues for personalized pharmacological treatment, bringing significant improvements to patient care.
