Abstract

Objective: To investigate scientific production on the mental health status of ICU nursing staff and its relationship with the work environment. Methods: Integrative review. For data collection, the search strategy used the boolean AND and the descriptors: “Nursing”, “Intensive Care Units” and “Mental Health”. A total of 71 articles were found in the VHL and PubMed. By applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the scope comprised 11 articles. Bardin's content analysis was carried out. The results were organized and presented in a figure and table with characterization and categories. Results: The ICU environment has several stressors which can affect the mental health of nursing staff, such as: ambience, high degree of technical demands and work overload; which can lead to mental suffering and to a more severe degree, Burnout. Such mental disorders can damage the mental health of the worker and have an impact on their professional practice and their own health. Final considerations: It is necessary to encourage research into this problem, together with actions to tackle it, in order to minimize the impact of work activities on mental health.
