Abstract

Objective: To synthesize the scientific evidence on factors that facilitate and hinder skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding in the first hour of life. Methods: Integrative literature review carried out between March and May 2024, in the Medline and LILACS databases. The research selected relevant articles to understand the aspects that influence the success of initial contact and breastfeeding. Results: Eight articles were included, identifying hindering factors, such as cesarean delivery, which makes it difficult to immediately initiate breastfeeding and contact due to postoperative recovery; the interventionist care model, which prioritizes medical interventions; the absence of a companion, which impairs emotional support for the mother; routine care for the newborn, which interferes with the time needed for initial contact; and the clinical conditions of mother and baby. Facilitating factors include vaginal delivery, which facilitates contact for the mother's faster recovery; training of the health team, which ensures the success of the breastfeeding process; the presence of a companion, essential in supporting the mother; and the humanized care model, which respects the mother's needs and values her choices. Final considerations: Recognizing these factors is essential to promote early breastfeeding and the mother-baby bond, in addition to contributing to the implementation of more humanized practices in care.
