Abstract
Objective: To describe the clinical and epidemiological profile of patients with spastic cerebral palsy treated by the pediatric orthopedics service at a referral hospital in Northern Brazil. Methods: This is an observational, retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive, and analytical study, in which patient records were analyzed to explore the association between the epidemiological profile and cases of cerebral palsy. Results: A total of 103 patients diagnosed with spastic cerebral palsy were included, the majority of whom were male (60.2%), with a mean age of approximately 9 years. About 32% of the patients can communicate verbally, but with difficulty, and 38.8% are unable to walk and require the exclusive use of a wheelchair. Most of the mothers had adequate prenatal care (64.1%); however, most of the children were born preterm (57.3%), which explains the main complications associated with CP in this study: prematurity, hypoxia, and fetal anoxia. A total of 83.5% of the patients use Botulinum Toxin type A (BTA), with the lower limbs being the most affected. Conclusion: At the end of the study, it was concluded that care begins before the gestational period and extends to specific post-diagnosis care. When initiated early, deficits are mitigated.
