Abstract
Objective: To identify, through the literature, the main drugs used in the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) and the impact of this disease on the mental health of patients. Methods: This is an integrative review, in which articles published since 2019, in Portuguese and English, were analyzed. The research was carried out between August and September 2024, in the databases: PubMed, Web of Science and Sciencedirect. The descriptors were: anticonvulsants, depression, trigeminal neuralgia, mental health, and treatment. As a guiding question: what is the most commonly used anticonvulsant in trigeminal neuralgia and the main impacts on patients' mental health? Results: After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, it was identified that carbamazepine (CBZ) and oxcarbazepine (OXC) are the most commonly used drugs in the treatment of TN and with the most adverse effects. Studies have shown that other anticonvulsants can be used to complement therapy. As for the way that TN interferes with the mental health of patients, it was identified that it can generate disorders such as depression and anxiety. Final considerations: Oxcarbazepine and carbamazepine are first-line drugs for TN and can be replaced by drugs with fewer adverse effects. TN causes negative impacts on mental health, and psychological monitoring of patients is important.
