Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the main complications and indications associated with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) use in dermatology and explore recommended practices for patient safety. Methods: Integrative review with data collection from PubMed Central on articles published from 2014 to 2024 in English. After screening 648 articles and applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 14 studies were selected. Results: PMMA use is associated with immediate complications, such as pain and swelling, and delayed ones, including granulomas and hypertrophic scars, requiring ongoing follow-up. Main indications are facial filling and scar treatment, with long-lasting results, especially in darker skin tones. However, areas like the periorbital region present a higher risk. Injection technique and careful patient selection are essential to minimize risks. Compared to hyaluronic acid, PMMA has a lower risk of vascular embolisms but is less suited for reversible treatments. Managing complications may involve corticosteroids or, in severe cases, surgical removal. Final Considerations: PMMA use, despite its indications, is linked to complications, highlighting the need for further studies on its long-term safety and efficacy.
