Abstract

Objective: To present the effects of strength training on cardiac autonomic modulation in malnourished patients. Methods: This integrative review included studies with different methodologies indexed in the Pubmed, Scielo, and SCOPUS databases published between 2014 and 2024, with no language restrictions. Results: Seven studies that met the inclusion criteria were found. Malnutrition is associated with dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), measured by heart rate variability (HRV) parameters. Malnourished patients present changes in autonomic modulation, but it is not possible to define whether this condition is due to increased sympathetic tone or withdrawal of vagal tone. Final considerations: Strength training improves autonomic modulation and contributes robustly to the management of patients with various clinical conditions, but no investigations were found that correlate these data with malnutrition, which can be explained by the lack of studies on the correlation between these conditions.
