Abstract

Objective: To evaluate parents’ behaviors and attitudes regarding childhood vaccination. Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study, conducted with 200 parents of children aged 0 to 11 years old, registered in family health units. Users completed a questionnaire about childhood vaccinations. The data were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis. Results: The sample, with a mean age of 31.7 ± 7.8 years, had a female majority (95%), where 44% had primary education and 46% secondary education. The majority of families (64.5%) with income below the minimum wage. Parents believed that it would be better for their children to receive fewer doses of vaccines at a time (44%), and 31% parents were concerned about adverse events following vaccination. Parents reported having delayed vaccinating their children (28%), and 12% failed to vaccinate their children. The majority (85.6%) of parents believed it was important to follow the vaccination schedule and declared their intention to vaccinate their children in the future (95%), in addition, 95% trusted the vaccination information received from health professionals. Conclusion: Delaying and failing to vaccinate children are common behaviors. Parents have paradoxical attitudes regarding their children's vaccines, although they are concerned about the effectiveness and safety of vaccines, they mentioned their intention to vaccinate their children.
