Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of periodontal diseases in adults treated at a university teaching clinic in the city of Maceió, Alagoas. Methods: This is a retrospective cross-sectional observational study based on data collection from 131 dental records of patients, associating the most prevalent periodontal diseases with sociodemographic factors and oral health. Pearson's chi-square test and descriptive statistics were used to calculate means, standard deviations and percentages. Results: A total of 80 (61.1%) adult individuals with periodontal diseases were found, with a higher prevalence of females (43 (37.3%) with a mean age of 40.9 years). The diagnosis of gingivitis was the most prevalent with 35.1%, with 40 (30.5%) with biofilm-induced gingivitis in intact periodontium, and 6 (4.6%) with biofilm-induced gingivitis in reduced periodontium. Next was periodontitis with 26%, at different stages. The association was positive between the variables of harmful habits, systemic diseases, factors associated with oral health and CPO-D index. Conclusion: The results reveal the high prevalence of periodontal diseases, considering the need to plan preventive actions aimed at oral health, aiming to reduce the impact of periodontal diseases on the quality of life of patients.
