Abstract

Objective: To analyze nurses' perceptions regarding risk classification in pediatrics, their knowledge about the use of triage protocols, and their challenges in assessment through Evaluation and Risk Classification in Pediatrics (ERCP). Methods: This exploratory and descriptive study employed a qualitative approach and was conducted with 10 nurses working in urgent care units in a municipality in the central-western region of Paraná, Brazil. The research was approved by the Research Ethics Committee and conducted using a semi-structured questionnaire developed by the authors. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and compiled into a textual corpus that underwent content analysis as proposed by Bardin. Results: The findings were divided into two categories: "The nurse's role in ERCP and adherence to the triage protocol" and "Weaknesses in the ERCP of children in Urgent Care." Conclusion: A failure in adherence to the triage protocol was identified, as evidenced by the lack of standardization and variation in practices, as well as shortcomings in the assessment of children's vital signs. Additionally, issues such as excessive workload and communication challenges with parents were noted as barriers. The lack of training for these professionals was highlighted as a key point for ensuring appropriate and evidence-based practices.
